The price of super unleaded gasoline has risen to 5,300 Ariary per liter as of Saturday. This 200 Ariary increase follows the resumption of the automatic price adjustment mechanism.
Since Saturday, September 5, 2026, the price of SP 95 super unleaded gasoline has increased from 5,100 to 5,300 Ariary at the pump. This hike coincides with the reactivation of the automatic fuel price adjustment mechanism, following the expiration of the energy state of emergency declared in August.
For the month of September, only super unleaded gasoline is affected. The price of diesel remains fixed at 4,860 Ariary per liter, and kerosene at 3,710 Ariary.
According to Cydolain Raveloson, Director General of the Malagasy Office of Hydrocarbons (OMH), this increase is a state decision. It is part of the automatic adjustment mechanism, which was restored in July 2026 after being suspended in April due to tensions in the international energy market.
The return of this mechanism raises concerns about the state’s ability to cushion the impact of global oil market fluctuations on consumers. Transport professionals and motorcycle taxi drivers have expressed concerns that rising fuel costs will reduce their profit margins and potentially lead to higher transport fares and increased prices for essential goods.
