The agronomy sector offers numerous professional opportunities that remain unfilled. “The Malagasy economy relies heavily on agricultural production and livestock farming. Given the scale of the needs, the number of agronomy graduates remains low,” stated Professor Hery Razafimahatratra, Director of the Higher School of Agronomic Sciences (ESSA) at the University of Antananarivo, yesterday, during the announcement of the 2026 Agronomy Fair, which will be held on September 15, 16, and 17 in Ankatso.
The field of agronomy still offers very broad prospects in Madagascar, ranging from agriculture and livestock to agri-food processing, forest conservation and management, environmental protection, agromanagement, as well as project development and production sectors. Graduates can either work for a company or start their own business. “It is rare for students who have completed their studies at this institution not to find a job,” the professor added.
He believes there is a lack of awareness among young people about the field, as well as some hesitation to work in rural areas. “This fair aims, among other things, to introduce the agronomy program at the University of Antananarivo to new high school graduates,” the director continued.
Although young people are showing more interest in this field, the intake capacity remains limited. Due to a lack of sufficient infrastructure, ESSA only produces 120 to 130 graduates per year.
