A delegation from the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) conducted a crackdown operation yesterday, resulting in sanctions against several individuals for violating hygiene regulations.
Residents were summoned to the CUA’s Directorate of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene office in Isotry for failing to comply with the municipal hygiene code. These infractions were identified during a surprise inspection involving hygiene inspectors, municipal police, and representatives from various municipal departments.
In Ambalavao-Isotry, the first stop of the intervention, merchants were caught red-handed leaving waste in front of their premises, which then scattered onto the road. In the same neighborhood, street vendors were sanctioned for lacking protective display cases, aprons, or head coverings.
“Several people received summonses, though it is unclear if all appeared. They were also ordered to immediately restore the cleanliness of the area,” stated an official from the Ambalavao-Isotry fokontany.
In Anosibe, where another CUA team conducted inspections, four people were reportedly summoned. Local sources noted various infractions, including a snack bar kitchen doubling as a shower, household toilets draining directly into canals, and individuals dumping waste in public areas.
Sanctions include fines and the mandatory cleaning of the affected areas. The Directorate of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene has yet to release a full report on the operation. While the intervention led to a slight improvement in cleanliness in Ambalavao-Isotry, local observers remain skeptical about the long-term impact. Despite these controls, unsanitary conditions persist in areas like Isotry, Anosibe, Analakely, and Behoririka, where waste and street vendors continue to obstruct public spaces.
