Regional transport operators in Mahajanga have been sensitized to the corruption risks associated with migration near the Ankarafantsika National Park.
The massive influx of migrants from the South is leading to significant deforestation and encouraging the development of illegal crops around the park. Furthermore, as a coastal city and a major transport hub, Mahajanga faces internal migration flows as well as risks of irregular maritime migration.
In this context, a meeting between competent authorities and regional transport operators was held last Monday at the headquarters of the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau (Bianco) in Mahajanga.
The regional director of Bianco Mahajanga, the director of the Land Transport Agency (ATT) of Mahajanga, and representatives of the National Gendarmerie met with representatives of regional transport operators to raise awareness about the importance of complying with current legislation and regulations.
This initiative is part of the implementation of actions planned following the assessment of corruption risks linked to migration around the Ankarafantsika National Park.
The goal is to strengthen compliance with existing laws and regulations while preventing various forms of corruption that may accompany migratory movements.
“Regional transport operators are responsible for applying legislation and regulations related to public transport, particularly in the fight against corruption. The use of the manifest is mandatory and helps combat clandestine migration networks,” stated the regional director of Bianco Mahajanga.
The manifest serves as a passenger traceability tool. It acts as an official list of travelers for every trip made by bush taxi or regional transport.
