Although temperatures are starting to rise this week, winter is not yet completely over in Madagascar. According to forecasts from the Ampandrianomby meteorological service, the end of winter is expected to begin from mid-September. An inter-seasonal period will then set in between September and November, before the arrival of the hot season. During this phase, the weather may still experience variations, with cool days alternating with days of higher temperatures.
As recalled by Lahatra Mampionona, a technician at the Ampandrianomby meteorological service, the end of winter does not correspond to a precise date established in advance on the Great Island. “It is defined based on the evolution of weather conditions observed on a daily basis,” he specifies. The transition from one season to another remains conditioned by the actual evolution of the weather and must be monitored day by day.
Madagascar’s climate is marked by two main seasons: the cold season, ‘ririnina’, which is equated to winter, and the hot and rainy season, ‘fahavaratra’, which is equated to summer. Between the two, the inter-season constitutes a transition period during which weather conditions evolve before the onset of a new season.
According to the calendar, summer mainly corresponds to the months of December, January, and February. The month of March is also considered part of the hot and rainy season. March and April then mark the beginning of a new transition period, which leads to the winter season. In May, the country enters the inter-season, and in June, the country settles into winter.
