INFRASTRUCTURE – Betioky Atsimo airfield comes back to life

The Betioky Atsimo airfield is operational once again. According to a publication by the Christian Association for Development and Environmental Action of Madagascar (ACDEM), the facility was rehabilitated with the support of the World Food Programme (WFP), with ACDEM overseeing the project’s implementation. The runway had been out of service for twenty years.

Its return to service is now effective. Take-off and landing tests were successfully conducted on the 1,300-meter-long runway, according to the statement.

For the time being, its primary purpose is humanitarian. This infrastructure will facilitate the delivery of humanitarian and food aid, improve access to communities and isolated areas, strengthen the intervention capabilities of the WFP and its partners during emergencies, and consolidate the resilience of the population in the Betioky-Sud district.

The airfield could also contribute to the economic and social development of the region. The Betioky-Sud district is home to the Bezà Mahafaly Special Reserve, whose visitors could eventually utilize this infrastructure.
