Traffic has been restored near Mandena in Tolagnaro. Following discussions regarding tensions in Andranokana, the roadblock installed on the road leading to the QMM company site in Mandena was lifted this Sunday. Traffic has resumed after representatives of the Andranokana residents removed the blockades they had set up at the ‘Quatre-Chemins’ junction on the axis leading to Mandena, the Ministry of Mines reported on its Facebook page.
The lifting of the blockade comes a few days after the suspension of QMM’s mining activities at the Mandena site. On August 27, the company announced the temporary halt of its operations in response to what it described as repeated blockages of the access road to its site. It cited conditions that no longer allowed for the safety and free movement of its employees, partners, and contractors to be guaranteed.
The removal of the roadblock marks a first sign of de-escalation. It follows mediation efforts led by authorities, social partners, and local notables to bring the different parties together. The residents of Andranokana are demanding, among other things, the payment of compensation related to agricultural activities they believe have been affected by mining operations.
Several exchanges have already taken place in Tolagnaro and Antananarivo between QMM, representatives of the Andranokana community, and the authorities. The discussions focus on the community’s demands as well as the conditions surrounding mining activities in Mandena.
For QMM, the resumption of activities remains conditional on the sustainable restoration of security and free movement to and from the Mandena site. The government is calling on the parties involved to continue the dialogue in a peaceful climate in order to reach a lasting solution.
