Madagascar is confirming its ambitions in the cocoa sector. On Thursday, August 27, 2026, in Antananarivo, the country officially signed the International Cocoa Agreement of 2026. The ceremony, held at the Hôtel Colbert, took place in the presence of Michel Arrion, Executive Director of the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO). For the authorities, this accession represents a strategic step to consolidate the position of Malagasy cocoa in international markets.
The main focus is on the quality of the national product. 100% of the cocoa exported by Madagascar is classified as “fine or flavor cocoa.” This recognition is a significant advantage for the country, providing it with a unique positioning in the global market. Madagascar now intends to better leverage this distinction to increase the value of its exports and the economic benefits for producers.
Through the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs and the National Cocoa Council, authorities aim to continue the efforts initiated in the sector. Improving quality, strengthening traceability, and developing local processing are among the top priorities. The goal is to create more value within Madagascar while enhancing the competitiveness of national cocoa.
The signing of this agreement is also expected to allow the country to strengthen exchanges with other global industry players. Technical and financial support could contribute to improving production practices and supporting the development of the sector.
However, increasing production remains a challenge. Michel Arrion emphasized the need for Madagascar to increase volume without compromising the quality that makes its cocoa unique. An excessive increase in supply could potentially create a surplus on the global market and exert pressure on prices.
