New equipment is arriving for the Andekaleka hydroelectric power plant. The first piece, a new 41 MVA transformer, is scheduled to arrive in Madagascar this November to strengthen and secure electricity production at the Andekaleka facility. According to the Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons, Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga, the equipment has already been ordered and is intended to reduce the risk of breakdowns associated with the aging transformer currently in service.
The Minister visited the Andekaleka site on August 26, leading a delegation from his department and Jirama. The visit aimed to identify equipment requiring replacement, rehabilitation, or maintenance at both Andekaleka and Mandraka. “It has already been ordered and should arrive in November. Once installed, it will increase power output while reducing the risk of sudden failure, given the age of the current transformer,” stated Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga.
The replacement of the 41 MVA transformer is part of a broader project to upgrade the facilities. Several pieces of equipment at the plant show signs of wear and require intervention to maintain reliability. According to Fanomezantsoa Andrianantoanina, the Jirama manager at Andekaleka, the production unit currently in service is due for a general overhaul. The last such overhaul reportedly took place about 24 years ago, even as the equipment continues to ensure hydroelectric production.
In addition to the transformer, other auxiliary installations must also be replaced. Pumps located in the lower parts of the plant are among the equipment concerned, as their malfunction can lead to water infiltration and flooding risks. Furthermore, the waste disposal system at the Andekaleka dam is currently out of service, and its restoration is crucial to prevent debris accumulation. The cable system for managing water retention valves also shows signs of aging and is slated for repair and replacement.
Both the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons and Jirama are working to establish maintenance and renewal priorities at Andekaleka and Mandraka to preserve existing production capacity, reduce failure risks, and extend the lifespan of hydroelectric infrastructure.
