The Port, Maritime and River Agency (APMF) has issued a reminder regarding maritime safety, emphasizing that night navigation between Ankify and Nosy Be requires specific authorization and equipment. This comes as traffic on this route has surged due to the upcoming Christian Youth Branch (STK) congress of the Reformed Church (FJKM).
Decle Tatazandriny, the APMF regional director for Nosy Be, stated that only vessels equipped with radar and GPS, and holding valid authorization, are permitted to sail at night. Currently, only three large vessels meet these requirements. For these ships, boarding at Ankify must conclude by 6:00 PM to ensure arrival at Nosy Be by 7:30 PM, subject to weather conditions.
Small vessels, such as speedboats and hulls, are strictly prohibited from sailing after 5:00 PM without regulatory authorization. The authorities also reiterated safety rules regarding passenger capacity, cargo weight, and mandatory rest periods for crews. A special meeting was held on Wednesday with the Prefect and boat owners to better manage the influx of passengers and vehicles.
Furthermore, the APMF denied any increase in transport fares. The cost for a vehicle including passengers is set at 400,000 ariary for a short Sprinter, 500,000 ariary for a long Sprinter, and 200,000 ariary for a 4×4. Individual passengers typically pay 10,000 ariary, though special rates apply to STK participants.
