Madagascar intends to strengthen its cooperation with the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation to improve maternal, neonatal, and reproductive health. Minister of Public Health, Dr. Managna Monira, and the Foundation’s Vice President, Professor Senait Fisseha, discussed this partnership on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 76th session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa in Addis Ababa.
The discussions focused on ways to sustainably improve the quality of care for women and newborns. Key areas addressed included strengthening the skills of healthcare professionals, ensuring the availability of necessary equipment, and improving the identification of causes of maternal and neonatal deaths.
This cooperation comes as Madagascar continues to face high levels of maternal and neonatal mortality. According to the latest joint estimates from the WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank, and UNDESA, the country recorded a maternal mortality ratio of 445 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023. Neonatal mortality stood at approximately 23 deaths per 1,000 live births.
These indicators highlight the persistent needs regarding pregnancy monitoring, childbirth management, and newborn care during the first weeks of life. In this context, the government plans to continue restoring health facilities, improving care for mothers and newborns, and strengthening the surveillance system for maternal and neonatal deaths.
The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with Madagascar. Its support is expected to focus on enhancing governance and national capacities through direct collaboration with the government. For both parties, this cooperation aims to improve women’s and children’s access to quality, safe, and rights-respecting health services, aligning with Madagascar’s efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.
