Rescue teams continued their efforts on Thursday to locate more than 1,300 missing people, including hundreds of foreign tourists, in the aftermath of devastating floods that left at least 273 dead along the Nepal-China border. According to preliminary official figures, a massive wall of water and mud submerged the region, sweeping away numerous homes and their occupants, claiming 270 lives on the Nepalese side and three in the neighboring Chinese territory of Tibet.
The wave was triggered by a glacier collapse, which was so violent that it caused a 5.2 magnitude earthquake and numerous landslides, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). In Nepal, the surge swept through the Trishuli River valley in the Nuwakot district, north of Kathmandu, and the Bhotekoshi valley east of the capital.
Twenty-four hours after the disaster, Nepalese authorities reported 823 people missing, including 517 foreign nationals. Across the border, Chinese state media reported that 558 people, including 260 foreigners, remained missing after mudslides buried Gyirong Port.
“Entire villages and markets have been wiped off the map,” said David Fisher, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Nepal. The Himalayan region is highly popular with hikers and mountaineers from around the world.
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah traveled to the disaster zones on Thursday. The army has deployed helicopters to evacuate 105 people and drop emergency medical supplies and humanitarian aid.
Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that the top priority is the mobilization of all resources to search for and rescue the missing, relocate endangered residents, and treat the injured. The Nepalese tourism office detailed that the missing foreign nationals include citizens from India, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Israel.
The Dalai Lama offered his prayers and condolences to the victims. Scientists note that climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of such events, which are common during the monsoon season.
