The Jirama agency in Tanjombato was struck by two successive fires on Saturday and yesterday. New electricity meters were destroyed in the blaze.
Yesterday, a new fire ravaged the Jirama Ambaniatsimo agency in Tanjombato, following a previous fire the day before. The damage has worsened. During the first incident, 196 new electricity meters were affected. According to the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons (MEH), these will be transferred to a specialized laboratory to determine if any can still be salvaged.
The incident led to a temporary suspension of electricity distribution in the area to prevent the fire from spreading and to mitigate further risks. Firefighters and law enforcement successfully brought the fire under control on Saturday after several minutes of effort.
According to an official report, the fire originated in a neighboring house before spreading to the Jirama building. Firefighters from Tsaralalàna, supported by two fire trucks, intervened around 5:30 PM and fully extinguished the flames by 6:00 PM. The Rapid Intervention Unit of the Tanjombato central police station assisted in the rescue operations, evacuating those present and securing the area.
No human casualties were reported. A witness stated: “The firefighting was still ongoing. One of the rescuers was injured by a falling beam while battling the flames inside. He was immediately transported to the hospital.”
Police indicated that the rear part of the building was completely destroyed during the first fire. Officers were divided into two teams: one to protect the perimeter and the other to patrol against potential intrusion or looting. The Criminal Brigade and the Scientific Police have been tasked with determining the exact causes of these fires. It was noted that on Saturday, only a guard and a duty officer were on-site.
In addition to the destroyed meters, cables, switchboards, and various equipment were reduced to ashes in the warehouse. The offices of the meter readers and the technical service, located on the upper floor, were also devastated.
The MEH has called for thorough investigations to establish responsibilities and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
