According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (Instat), the number of non-resident visitor arrivals at Madagascar’s borders fell by 7.9% in the first half of 2026. A total of 80,342 arrivals were recorded between January and June, compared to 87,190 during the same period in 2025.
This decline follows a year in 2025 marked by a recovery in tourism activities. However, monthly data show contrasting trends over the first six months of 2026.
In January, 30,469 non-resident visitors arrived in Madagascar, a level almost stable compared to the 30,263 recorded a year earlier. February, on the other hand, showed an increase, with 22,877 arrivals compared to 17,722 in February 2025.
The trend reversed in March, with 17,844 arrivals compared to 15,582 a year earlier. April then recorded a more marked decline, with 27,925 arrivals compared to 32,483 in April 2025. In May, 27,911 arrivals were counted, compared to 29,664 a year earlier. June closed the first half of the year with 24,506 arrivals, compared to 25,043 in June 2025.
Overall, for the January-June period, the number of non-resident visitors remains lower than in the first half of 2025, confirming a slowdown in tourist traffic at the beginning of 2026.
