The jury has lowered the admission threshold for the baccalaureate in Antananarivo. The deliberation grade has been set at 9.75 out of 20 for the 2026 session, compared to 10 out of 20 in 2025. “The grade of 9.75 was decided after long and heated debates,” reported some examiners.
Teachers from the University of Antananarivo and examiners, primarily high school teachers who make up the jury, struggled to reach an agreement. University professors advocated for maintaining the threshold at 10 out of 20, arguing that it would help preserve the academic level of university students. Meanwhile, the examiner-teachers defended a slightly lower success threshold, noting that many students do not necessarily pursue university studies and that students from other provinces, where the threshold was already 9.75, would also be competing for spots. A show of hands finally settled the matter.
The resulting success rate is estimated at 51%, according to several examiners, though the Baccalaureate Office has not confirmed this figure, stating that official data will only be released on Saturday. If confirmed, this would be an increase from last year’s 47% success rate, though it remains lower than the 57% and 56% recorded in 2023 and 2024, respectively, when the threshold was also 9.75.
Examiners noted a generally weak level among candidates, particularly in scientific subjects. Several factors are cited for this trend, including frequent disruptions to the school calendar due to epidemics, cyclones, and political crises. Furthermore, the education system faces challenges such as low teacher qualifications, lack of pedagogical materials, overcrowded classrooms, and the growing, often uncritical, reliance on artificial intelligence by students.
