People are interested in history, but there is a lack of accessible books. School history education has often been superficial. For me, my passion for history didn’t come from rote memorization in school, but from traveling with my father, who would point out historical sites and explain their significance.
Although my father did not read the Tantara Ny Andriana—a collection of oral traditions compiled by the Jesuit priest François Callet (1822-1885) during his nineteen years in Imerina—the history he knew, passed down through our ancestors who helped found the Protestant church in Ambohidratrimo in the 19th century, often aligns with the records in the book.
The ability of our ancestors to preserve oral traditions is remarkable. Before the 19th century, there was no writing in Imerina except for the Sorabe used by the Antemoro people. Raombana was the first Malagasy to leave written records, though he wrote in English out of fear of the monarchy. The Tantara Ny Andriana itself was not widely circulated; Alain Delivré noted that only a few dozen copies were printed because Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony was wary of reviving the past.
It is important to note that the Tantara Ny Andriana should not be taken literally. Alain Delivré’s 1968 doctoral thesis in Paris, titled Interprétation d’une tradition orale, remains the most critical and authoritative analysis of the work.
Beyond historical analysis, modern scientific findings—in archaeology, linguistics, and genetics—have made it difficult to cling to old myths. Studies by Dahl and Adelaar on the linguistic links between Malagasy and the Barito languages of Indonesia, as well as archaeological evidence from Tritrivakely and Kavitaha, provide a more empirical view of our past. The history of the ancestors is not yet fully written; it remains a subject for future generations to explore and understand.
