An interministerial note has formalized a strict health protocol at air and sea borders. Several measures are now in effect to prevent the introduction of the Ebola virus into Madagascar.
Every traveler entering Madagascar may be subject to a health examination. The government has announced the implementation of border measures to prevent the Ebola virus from reaching the country. All passengers must complete a health declaration form and undergo a screening process, including a clinical assessment if necessary.
“Upon arrival at the airport, passengers undergo temperature checks in addition to routine document verification. Border health officers perform visual examinations to identify suspicious symptoms such as fever, fatigue, vomiting, or other signs,” a source from the Ministry of Public Health explained yesterday.
Anyone exhibiting suspicious symptoms will be immediately referred to competent services and managed according to national protocols, as stated in the interministerial note dated August 19.
Madagascar is also restricting access to its territory for individuals arriving from affected countries. Entry is “temporarily prohibited” for any foreign national who has stayed in or transited through an affected country within the last 21 days.
“The specific countries are not named, as the list will be adjusted based on the evolution of the epidemic,” a Ministry of Public Health official noted.
Exceptions are made for Malagasy citizens, foreign residents, holders of valid work or study visas, diplomats, and expatriate staff of international organizations and NGOs. However, their entry remains conditional upon a strict 21-day quarantine with medical monitoring. All costs, including accommodation, meals, and transfers, are the responsibility of the individual. A medical certificate issued by health authorities will validate the end of the quarantine, which employers are required to recognize.
Furthermore, travel from Madagascar to affected areas is suspended until further notice. The government warns that any violation of these provisions or false declarations will be subject to legal sanctions.
