On Tuesday, a couple residing in Ambohimarina, Sabotsy Namehana, lost their 4-year-old daughter after she was struck by a municipal garbage collection truck.
The tragic accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on a dirt road in the Antranombitsika area, within the Ambohidrano Andrefana fokontany. The truck was heading to the Ambatolampy waste disposal site when it lost control. According to the gendarmerie report, the incident was caused by a steering system failure, combined with excessive speed and a lack of vigilance by the driver.
The young girl was rushed to the Anosy Avaratra hospital by her mother and relatives, but she succumbed to her severe injuries. Mechanical inspection of the truck revealed poor maintenance, specifically a rusted and broken steering rod. The 51-year-old driver has been taken into custody and is awaiting appearance before the Avaradrano court. Local residents have expressed deep sorrow and concern regarding the safety of children playing near roads in areas with inadequate infrastructure.
