In 2020, girls accounted for only 17% of students in Mathematics and Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Antananarivo, compared to 63% in the Faculty of Letters. This disparity highlights their low representation in scientific fields. Obstacles often emerge during academic orientation, driven by stereotypes and sexist practices within families and schools. In rural and disadvantaged areas, difficulties in accessing and continuing education further hinder their academic paths.
These issues were the focus of a workshop held on August 18 at the Ministry of National Education in Anosy. A pre-facto study conducted between February and April 2025 identified key factors influencing the access, persistence, and success of girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as the digital sector. The findings are intended to help adapt pedagogical practices.
Among the tools presented is Zah’Ai, a solution accessible via smartphone, tablet, or computer, with or without an Internet connection. It provides resources dedicated to artificial intelligence and autonomous learning.
The program targets students in the 10th and 11th grades (Seconde and Première) as well as their teachers in pilot high schools across the Analamanga, Amoron’i Mania, and Diana regions.
