Following the thousands of people who gathered for the Star Tour, it is time for cleanup. In Mahajanga, around a hundred young people participated earlier this week in a ‘Kopakelatra’ operation organized at the event site and several public spaces. Moov Up Boeny, the Club Wash, young volunteers from the DREN, and staff members from Star also took part in the initiative.
The initiative aims to preserve the city’s highly frequented areas. ‘It is also a way for us to thank the population,’ emphasized Soamihanta Andriamanantena, head of CSR at Star. Dolsain Guy Arvely, the PDS (Special Delegation President) of Mahajanga, also supported the operation, highlighting the importance of preserving one of the most popular beaches for vacationers.
Deployed in six cities, the Kopakelatra project has collected 270 tons of plastic waste this year. These materials are then sent for recycling. Star transforms them into jackets, while partner associations use the bottles to manufacture interlocking paving stones.
Beyond cleaning, Star now wishes to strengthen awareness. Together with the PDS of Mahajanga, its CSR manager is planning a campaign to mobilize the population, associations, and businesses around waste collection and recycling. A new operation is also scheduled for September as part of World Cleanup Day.
