The Barea national team is not expected to step onto the pitch of the Barea Mahamasina Stadium until March 2027. The installation of the new hybrid turf and other remaining works will not be completed before the end of this year. Alain Rasambany, Minister of Youth and Sports, told 2424.mg in an interview last week that “the installation of these complementary infrastructures will take three to four months.”
According to the minister, the procurement process should have been finalized last week. “It was planned that the complementary infrastructure works would begin towards the end of August,” he specified. These works include the installation of the hybrid turf, the renovation of the changing rooms for the annex field, and the repair of access points on the stands side.
However, the ministry will not wait for the completion of the construction site to request inspectors from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the stadium’s homologation, the minister emphasized. The goal is to make the venue operational by the first international window of 2027.
Malagasy football fans will therefore have to continue following their national team’s performances from a distance during the two home matches scheduled for the first four matchdays of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
At the beginning of the year, the official had announced the completion of the work for this month. “It is true that a six-month schedule had been established initially, but administrative details related to public procurement are often what delay this type of infrastructure,” he explained. He claims to have negotiated with officials to streamline the procedure compared to usual practices. As for the funding, it is reportedly already available.
