In Tsiroanomandidy, a 73-year-old man was placed in pre-trial detention on August 14. He allegedly sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl.
The case came to light following a report published on Facebook, where residents alerted the public to the actions of this septuagenarian, who was already suspected of abusing several minors in exchange for money.
According to the police report, the incident took place on August 7 in the Mangarivotra neighborhood. The victim, who was in a field collecting wood, was allegedly forced and assaulted by the man. She did not dare to tell her parents immediately, fearing threats from her alleged attacker. It was not until the next day that she was taken to the Tsiroanomandidy Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors confirmed serious injuries resulting from sexual violence.
The child’s parents did not file a complaint due to economic difficulties and fear of retaliation. Despite this, police officers from the local station and the Women’s Proximity Brigade opened an investigation on August 13, summoning local officials and gathering testimonies. The suspect was presented to the prosecutor on August 14 and incarcerated pending his trial, scheduled for August 31, 2026.
Police authorities state that other children may have been victims of the same individual, but fear has prevented their families from filing complaints.
