A recovery? According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons on Friday, Chinese experts are conducting a “preliminary evaluation mission” on the progress of the “Tanà Medium Ring” project. They held a meeting on the technical aspects of the project with officials from the ministry.
According to the ministerial statement, the meeting allowed for a detailed discussion of the construction sites and infrastructure inherent to the project. It includes the construction of a 185-kilometer-long, 90-kilovolt high-voltage electricity transmission line, as well as the installation of transformers and eight substations. This infrastructure will be distributed between Antsipolitra, Antsirabe I, Antanifotsy, Behenjy, Tanà Sud II, Ambohijanaka, Tanà Ouest II, and Imerintsiatosika.
This meeting could signal the start of the implementation phase for this project, which dates back to 2024. When it was adopted by the Council of Ministers, the authorities at the time classified it as a “priority project.” The stated objective is to strengthen access to electricity on the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) and to modernize the distribution network.
On the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September 2024, the Malagasy delegation visited the headquarters of Tebian Electric Apparatus (TBEA Group), which will be responsible for implementing the “Tanà Medium Ring” project. It was also noted that the project would be financed by the Chinese government to the tune of 177 million dollars, through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
