A challenge to overcome. The shortage of ophthalmologists in Madagascar remains a barrier to accessing eye care, particularly outside of Antananarivo. To help strengthen available expertise, the Madagascar Vision Institute (IVM) is focusing on training and providing specialized literature. A program to this effect is already underway, according to the institute’s founder, who is currently visiting Madagascar.
Strengthening knowledge and training eye health specialists were at the heart of discussions during a visit by the IVM delegation to the ophthalmology department of the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona University Hospital Center (CHUJRA) on August 14. The fact remains that the number of ophthalmologists in Madagascar is still insufficient, with only about 80, most of whom are concentrated in the capital. Specialists are also scarce, particularly in highly specialized fields such as retinal surgery.
The collaboration between CHUJRA and IVM aims to bring these skills to various regions of Madagascar through the training of ophthalmologists. This will allow the population to access care without having to travel to Antananarivo. According to the institute’s founder, Dr. James L. Davidian, eight ophthalmologists have already undergone training at IVM, five of whom are currently practicing, while three are still completing the theoretical portion.
The training is accompanied by access to specialized resources. IVM has donated 26 books in 13 volumes, as well as two dictionaries, to the CHUJRA ophthalmology department. These books, published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, are valued at $3,600. According to the department head, Professor Léa Raobela, these works will allow doctors and students to update their knowledge in a constantly evolving field. They will be available for consultation in the department’s library or can be borrowed by ophthalmologists and students.
