Following the tribute concert for his father on the Grande Scène de Jazz@Tohatohabato, Ny Ray Fanaiky Rasolomahatratra, son of the iconic bassist Fanaiky, reflects on this emotional performance, his apprenticeship under his father, and his ambition to keep his musical legacy alive.
In an interview, Ny Ray shares his feelings about the tribute, noting that while he felt pride in carrying on his father’s legacy, he also felt a deep sense of loss. He emphasizes that he does not want to simply replicate his father’s style but aims to build his own identity as a bassist while honoring the techniques and values passed down to him.
Ny Ray began playing the bass at age 11 under his father’s guidance. After learning the basics, he became largely self-taught, driven by a desire to progress and make his father proud. His first professional stage appearance with his father was in 2022 at the CGM Analakely, a moment he cherishes as the beginning of his journey as his father’s successor.
Looking ahead, he dreams of organizing an ultimate tribute concert that would bring together all the musicians who collaborated with Fanaiky, aiming to tell his father’s story through his entire body of work.
