The recent donation of 40 million ariary by the President of the Refoundation to the Apokalypsy Church, along with the decoration of Pastor Mailhol as Grand Officer of the National Order, has overshadowed a major announcement for football fans: the rehabilitation of the Barea Stadium. Colonel Randrianirina announced that work is set to begin at the end of this month to ensure the stadium meets international standards.
While the political and religious controversy dominated headlines, the critical issue of the stadium’s homologation—which has failed five previous CAF inspections—remains a priority. The stadium, a symbol of the previous regime’s failures, was built at a cost of 78 million dollars without proper technical consultation, leading to significant structural flaws, including a non-professional athletics track.
Previous attempts to fix the stadium were described as mere “paracetamol” treatments for a deep wound. There is now hope that this time, the rehabilitation will be thorough and the stadium will finally be validated (var…idé) by the CAF.
