VACATION – RN7 accounts for nearly 52% of taxi-brousse departures from Antananarivo, according to the Land Transport Agency

The peak travel season has arrived in Antananarivo. The capital’s bus stations are seeing record crowds during these school holidays. According to the Land Transport Agency (ATT), approximately 340 ‘taxi-brousses’ (bush taxis) leave the capital daily, transporting over 6,460 passengers to various regions of Madagascar.

Nearly 52% of these departures take the RN7 national road, heading primarily toward Ambatolampy, Faratsiho, Antsirabe, Ambositra, Fianarantsoa, and Toliara. The RN4 leading to Mahajanga ranks second with 22.3% of traffic, followed by the RN2 connecting Antananarivo to Toamasina and Fenoarivo Atsinanana at 13.9%, and the RN6 at 11.8%.

In response to the increased traffic during this holiday period, the ATT states it is strengthening control and passenger safety measures. The agency explains that these measures are applied from the moment of departure; no vehicle is authorized to leave the station until its condition, document compliance, adherence to required standards, and the driver’s fitness to operate the vehicle have been verified. Cooperatives, vehicle owners, and drivers are also being reminded of their responsibilities regarding passenger safety.

Once on the road, the ATT has set up unique checkpoints at the exits of national roads. The agency is also strengthening its collaboration with various authorities in charge of road control, particularly law enforcement officers operating on national roads. The number of breathalyzers used by law enforcement has also been increased to enhance driver monitoring.

To meet demand during this high season, the ATT offices will maintain a duty service every Saturday morning, specifically for those wishing to complete administrative procedures. “The goal is to ensure quality and safe land transport so that all road users can travel with peace of mind and return home safe and sound,” the ATT emphasized.
