SOLIDARITY – State and associations mobilize to support merchants affected by the Bazary Kely fire in Toamasina

Solidarity is being organized in Toamasina following the fire that devastated the Bazary Kely market on the night of August 2nd to 3rd. The State, associations, and various stakeholders are mobilizing to assist the affected merchants, with the common goal of enabling them to resume their activities as quickly as possible.

On August 5th and 6th, state aid arrived in Toamasina. The first wave consisted of 7,500 corrugated iron sheets, 96 tons of cement, and nails. A second donation of 60 tons of cement subsequently supplemented this assistance.

The Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons also provided support on August 7th, including 43 bags of rice, 100 corrugated iron sheets, 10 million Ariary, a fuel card worth 5 million Ariary, and 166 bags of cement.

As part of its solidarity actions, the Fanjiry Association, led by First Lady Elisa Randrianirina, also traveled to Toamasina on Saturday to support the affected merchants. The association notably donated 65 tons of rice, equivalent to nearly 1,300 bags, to the victims. A portion of this aid was distributed directly to the concerned merchants.

The Coordination Unit for the Reconstruction of Toamasina is overseeing the distribution of aid intended for merchants of the 2,416 kiosks destroyed by the fire. The reconstruction of the kiosks has already begun. Some merchants are opting for permanent structures, while others are rebuilding their wooden stalls to resume their business as soon as possible.
