EVENT – Two days at Antaninarenina Garden to help children rediscover traditional Malagasy games

Two days to disconnect from screens and rediscover the games of yesteryear. Traditional Malagasy games will be in the spotlight on August 15 and 16 at the Antaninarenina Garden, during “Zara Lalao,” a cultural and solidarity event organized by the Sombiny Haiko association. This initiative aims to both promote Malagasy cultural heritage and mobilize resources for the most vulnerable children.

During the event, the public will be able to rediscover several traditional games through demonstrations, play areas, and creative workshops. Planned activities include “Vitsilihy,” “Raosy Jamba,” “Sabaka,” “Jomaka,” “Kanety,” “Zoera,” and “Tsobato,” as well as a workshop dedicated to making “Papango” (kites). Exhibition stands will also allow partners and artisans to showcase their activities.

The event will also be punctuated by singing and dancing performances. Several Malagasy artists will take the stage. The goal is to offer a family-friendly gathering while strengthening intergenerational bonds through Malagasy cultural practices. “To allow everyone to contribute to this dynamic of solidarity, donation collection boxes will be installed at the event site,” the association stated.

Created in October 2025, the Sombiny Haiko association brings together Malagasy singers and hosts living in Madagascar and within the diaspora. It carries out actions in the fields of education, nutrition, and health for the benefit of vulnerable children. Through “Zara Lalao,” the association also wishes to strengthen its social actions. Currently, 120 children benefit from its interventions, with the ambition of gradually expanding this aid, particularly to students at the Akany Onjasoa in Toamasina, which has about 1,500 students. The association also plans to extend the concept to other cities, including Antsirabe, Toamasina, and the South, before an international deployment, starting with Paris.
