ATHLETICS – SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP – Athletes launch the battle for the 2027 JIOI

The Alarobia stadium will host the Madagascar senior championships from August 7 to 9. The country’s top athletes will gather to compete for the national title and earn points for pre-selection to the national team, marking the first step in preparations for the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games (JIOI) in Comoros.

Performances at Alarobia will serve as a benchmark for the Malagasy Athletics Federation (FMA) to identify athletes who will form the backbone of the future national squad.

One of the most anticipated events is the women’s 400m hurdles final. Cynthia Nahamako and Anna Andrianjafy are expected to engage in a high-level duel for the national crown. Both are top specialists in the discipline and will look to send a strong signal to the selectors. They were gold medalists in the 4x400m relay at the last JIOI 2023 edition in Madagascar.

The sprint events also promise excitement. In the men’s category, the 100m final will feature a clash between junior champion Eric Justin and national speed reference Toky Ralison. This face-off between rising youth and experience is a highlight of the competition.

In the women’s category, the 100m promises a great confrontation between Andyh Embony, the junior champion in the 100m and 200m last weekend, and Haingo Brigitte Razanajafy. Both sprinters aim to establish themselves as the new national references.

Middle and long-distance races will also offer suspense, with Marthe Ralisinirina being a key attraction, while established athletes like Patrice Remandro and Gertun Rebiby will seek to confirm their elite status.

“The federation has its sights set on the 2027 JIOI in Comoros. With less than a year to go, this senior national summit will give us insights into the profiles of athletes to be selected for the national team,” said Tsiry Manantena Rakotomalala, National Technical Director (DTN) of the FMA.
