Three foreigners were injured in South Africa on Wednesday when a protest against undocumented migrants turned violent in a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, according to provincial police. This region remains the epicenter of a persistent, albeit less intense, anti-immigration movement. The campaign, launched by fringe groups and active for months, has previously been marred by xenophobic violence that has resulted in the deaths of four foreigners, police reported.
“Two of the injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital, while the third has not yet been located,” police stated regarding the violent incidents in Kranskop, located 150 km inland from Durban. “Initial investigations indicate that the victims are in the country legally; however, their immigration status will be verified by the Department of Home Affairs,” the police added. The nationalities of the victims were not disclosed.
This campaign against illegal immigration reached its peak on June 30, the deadline set by these groups for undocumented individuals to leave South Africa. Tensions and intimidation associated with the movement have triggered an exodus of over 176,000 people, according to an AFP tally based on figures provided by African governments that have received their returning nationals.
“At least 80 people” were arrested on Wednesday following “looting of businesses” in addition to the violence. “The police are also investigating reports that one of the victims had a sum of money stolen,” the statement noted.
On the previous day, Amnesty International called on South African authorities to “end the intimidation by groups taking the law into their own hands and to investigate police complicity.” Shenilla Mohamed, the NGO’s director in South Africa, stated, “The state’s inaction in the face of these groups has created a dangerous impression that individuals have the right to trample on the rights of others simply because of their nationality or perceived migration status.”
“Although the government has clearly stated it will not tolerate illegal identity checks, acts of intimidation, and civilians usurping police powers, such abuses continue to occur. Authorities must go beyond mere statements expressing concern,” she urged.
